NGP vs. Numero: Can a New Software Company Challenge the Oldest and Largest?

You’re likely familiar with NGP, the industry standard for fundraising and compliance software. But newer platforms like Numero are attempting to challenge NGP’s dominance. However, campaigns rarely have the time to experiment with new systems during an election cycle. Campaigns must balance the potential for a better tool with operational reliability and compliance risk. So, is Numero worth that tradeoff?

Campaigns have a universal challenge: to raise money as quickly as possible to best position themselves to get their message out, hire effective and experienced staff, and position themselves to win. When NGP VAN was first founded in 2001, that process looked a lot different than it does today. Most campaigns used paper binders of printed pages of donor call sheets and tracked the calls using handwritten notes, of varying clarity and readability, meaning a lot of time had to be spent preparing the sheets and entering the call notes to a database for tracking and following up on contributions. In 2026, it’s standard for a campaign’s finance staff to set them up on a call time system or app to make call time more engaging and reduce friction for the candidate. After all, a second (almost) universal challenge is that most candidates really don’t like doing call time, so the easier a finance team can make it for the candidate, the more donor contacts are made.

Numero has a compelling back story. Numero states that they were built by “one of the top fundraising Congressional candidates of 2018, a Democratic CTO, and CFO who built their own software during their campaign because they found NGP 8 to be slow, poorly designed and supported, and was actively hurting their fundraising numbers.” Unfortunately, Numero has yet to implement some crucial tools that campaigns rely on NGP for. For example, Numero currently (as of May 2026) does not support embedded donation forms, which can add friction to donor conversion on landing pages and make paid ad campaigns less effective.

NGP has made significant progress in catching up to Numero and other call time focused apps launched in the late 2010s. In 2021, they significantly invested in their native call time app which is provided for free to all NGP users. In 2024, NGP announced a partnership with a competitor to Numero, Pingdex, demonstrating a willingness to open their software to other developers in an effort to give NGP’s customers more choices and accessibility. NGP includes their call time app for no additional cost to their compliance users.

For campaigns that are heavily focused on compliance and managing large amounts of donor data, NGP will still be a necessary tool in their finance team’s toolbox. For compliance and financial reporting to the FEC and state and local election agencies, NGP’s one-click to file integration is a powerful tool that greatly increases the ease in filing reports. NGP also integrates with voter registration files, eliminating the need for potentially messy imports and uploads.

In our evaluation of Numero, Princeton Strategies does not currently view Numero as an NGP replacement. Unlike NGP’s one-click FEC filing workflow, Numero does not currently support a fully integrated end-to-end submission process for federal compliance reporting.
